This project is my attempt to document what I believe all dwellers of metropolises experience on an almost daily basis: solitude in the midst of a crowd.
All photographs were made in Central London at busy times of day, and each features a single individual spending a quiet, contemplative or carefree moment alone.
I had expected a thread of melancholy to run through the photographs, though while I did find longing I also found a certain quiet determination.
Perhaps owing to having spent my formative years in vibrant India, black and white photography did not come naturally to me as a medium. This project allowed me explore and enjoy my adopted city as I never did before.
It has also unexpectedly become a tribute not just to my fellow citizens, but also to the architecture and built environment of London.
